The Best Mother A Gypsy Vanner
Could Ever Have.
Inspired by the words of a veterinarian, the concept of Mules becoming Moms was born.
“The mule became the greatest equine mother I have ever witnessed.
Watching her care for her baby brought tears to my eyes.”
~ Dr. Pablo Toro DVM
The offspring of a male donkey and a horse mare, mules have been put to
work on the farm and as pack animals for millennia. Although generally
good-natured, there is one lament that has cursed this equine breed since
the beginning of time. The females cannot conceive. Despite the fact that they
lactate and exhibit all the other virtues of motherly love that nature has
bestowed, they are naturally barren, their parental instincts and innate desire to
nurture unrequited. That has all changed with the arrival of the Mule Moms program at DeerFields Stables. Our resident mules serve as recipient mothers for Gypsy Vanner genetics. They carry their foals to term, and nurture them into life, caring for the babies
as they grow strong and healthy.
